UPS Power

UPS is an acronym for Uninterruptible Power Supply. A UPS is defined as a back-up power system used to ensure uninterrupted power for various electronic devices.

The three basic types of UPS Systems.

1) Standby Power System (SPS):
Most Commonly used to protect POS equipment and single work stations. Monitors the power line, when a problem is detected, the SPS switches to battery power.

2) Line Interactive:
Most commonly used UPS system for network environments. Used for small networks up to enterprise applications. The inverter (a battery-to-AC power converter) is always connected to the UPS output. The inverter operates in reverse during times when the input AC power is normal to provide battery charging.

3) Double Conversion On-line UPS:
Most commonly used for mission critical applications: server farms, hospitals, etc. Avoids momentary power lapses by continuously providing power from its own inverter. The double conversion on-line UPS provides power from its own inverter even with proper power line functioning.

Power Distribution Unit (PDU)

Rack PDU:
A rack PDU is a power distribution device designed to fit into a server rack in either a vertical (0U) or horizontal (1U or more) position.
Available in Four conventional designs:

Basic PDU:
simply supply IT equipment with multiple AC outlets.

Metered PDU:
Have a LED status display built into the unit itself. This feature allows at-the-rack current monitoring for each unit as a whole.

Monitored PDU:
Typically include the feature sets of the metered and switched products in a single unit.

Switched PDU:
Typically includes the features of the Metered PDU as well as the ability to remotely control the on/off state and reboot capabilities of each outlet contained in the unit through a web interface or a serial (RS232) menu.2) Floor mount Power Distribution Unit: Floor mount PDUs traditionally contain isolation transformers, which feed power downstream to rack based PDUs.
